He might as well have said his family, his love, with that look in his eyes. And she’d thought the flames hot! If Napoleon had seen Quillan St. Claire then, he would have known that invading England was entirely too dangerous.

“No,” she said, catching his arm. “This is what he wants—you out at sea and at his mercy.”

Those dark eyes bored into hers. “I have been at sea for nearly two decades. I have never been at anyone’s mercy.”

“You won’t be sailing today, in any event,” Mr. Howland put in. “We may have to patch or replace the sails. Even if they’re intact, we’ll have to calculate the amount of rope needed to replace the lines, then string them properly. And there will be other cleanup.”

Alex lifted his foot from the deck and wrinkled his nose as he glanced at the slime covering his boots. Whatever water Quill had been spraying, it had been none too clean. Drops of greenish-brown marred her silk gown as well, splashed from below and above. Likely she would never be able to remove the stains. But better the loss of a gown than the loss of his ship.

“I’ll see to the cleanup in the morning,” Quill said. “Hugh!”

His bosun had been staring at the bundled sails as if searching for flaws. Now his gaze snapped to his captain’s. “Aye?”

“Take an inventory of what must be done and how many men we’ll need for the work. I’ll meet you at the cottage after I’ve escorted Mademoiselle Fortier to her lodgings.”

James stepped forward. “I can escort mademoiselle home. You will want to stay with Hugh.”

Quill glared at him. “I’ve had just about enough of being watched like a toddler off leading strings.”

“And yet this proves someone is out to harm you,” Ree protested.

He aimed his glare her way. “It proves someone was out to harm my ship, nothing more. And it may not even prove that. For all we know, the fire had natural causes—a ray of sunlight magnifying a raindrop, a stray bolt of lightning.”

She glanced up. “From a cloudless sky?”

“She’s right,” the magistrate said. “I had word from the encampment at West Creech. One of the outbuildings between Dove Cottage and Upper Grace showed signs that someone had been there recently.”

Hugh stiffened, but Quill seized on the word. “Recently? How recently?”

“Within the last week or so,” James replied.

“But not now?” Ree asked.

The magistrate shook his head. “The remains of a meal were at least a few days old.”

Quill threw up his hands. “The meal might have come from a vagrant or even a youth out on a lark. It doesn’t prove anyone is after me.”

Hugh coughed. “Begging your pardon, Captain, but I know someone truly is here to stop you.”

Quill’s look softened. “You may have been struck, Hugh, but I’m having a hard time connecting your injury to this fire, much less a danger to my life.”

“And what of our redheaded stranger,” Ree argued, “who runs at the least sign of us?”

“You, madam,” he said, “could terrify the fiercest heart.
